SME
small or medium-sized enterprise
SMEs can be further split into small and medium-sized enterprises.
While the definitions are looser in the United States, in this country small enterprises have fewer than 50 employees, and medium-sized enterprises have fewer than 250 employees.
SMEs play an important role in the economy. Together, they employ vast numbers of people and help to shape innovation by trying new things not offered by larger businesses.
They include bars, coffee shops, restaurants, manufacturers, retailers, gyms, hair salons, dentist surgeries, therapy centres, law firms, building firms, independent games studios, website development companies, IT security companies and many more.
